The
Campsites

Wilga Downs is 250 acres — about the combined size of Sydney's Hyde Park, Domain, and Royal Botanic Gardens. Three designated sites have flat gravel parking bays and fire pits, but self-contained campers are welcome to choose their own spot within permitted areas. Four-wheel drive and off-road rigs are recommended — these are real bush sites, not park-and-plug pads.

Raised with care,
on land we love

At the heart of Wilga Downs is our commitment to sustainable, ethical farming. Our Angus cattle and Damara sheep thrive on lush pastures and fresh mountain air, resulting in marbled beef and succulent lamb that's a true culinary delight.

Our geese, ducks and chickens roam freely. We employ organic practices to preserve the natural beauty of the land — ensuring Wilga Downs remains vibrant and diverse for generations.

Besides the farm itself, there's an adjoining pine forest of about 2,000 acres with many kilometres of trails and wonderful mushroom foraging in autumn.

Things you might
want to know

How big is the farm?+
Wilga Downs is just shy of 100ha, or 250 acres. Small by Aussie standards, but for reference that's about the same as Sydney's Hyde Park, Domain, and Royal Botanic Gardens combined — or Melbourne's MCG and Olympic Park precincts.
What animals are on the farm?+
We breed Angus cattle and Damara sheep. We also have three horses, two Shetland ponies, geese, chickens, and two English Cocker Spaniels. Visitors are welcome to observe from a safe distance, though due to biosecurity we don't offer direct animal interactions.
How far from Sydney?+
We're 198km from the centre of Sydney. Without traffic, that's approximately 2h50m from the CBD and about 2h from Penrith. The drive through the Blue Mountains is part of the experience.
What's the nearest town for shopping?+
Oberon is a 10–15 minute drive, with two supermarkets (IGA and Foodworks), two butchers, cafes, petrol stations, and a few shops. Coles and Woolies are 45–50 minutes away in Bathurst or Lithgow.
What's the climate like?+
Summers are short and mild — highs around 24°C in Dec/Jan, rarely exceeding 28°C. Winters are cold with highs around 5°C and overnight lows near 0°C (with wind chill often feeling like -5°C or colder). Spring and autumn are a mixed bag. Always pack warm clothes.
Does it snow?+
In a typical winter we see 4–6 snow events. Snow settles on the ground perhaps 2–3 times, and once a year or so we get a decent dump (10–20cm or more). July and August are the best months. It can snow at any time of year, but timing your trip to coincide requires some luck (or last-minute booking when heavy snow is forecast).
Is the cottage private?+
Yes. Guests have exclusive, private use of the cottage, carport and yard. The nearest other dwelling — the Homestead — is just over half a kilometre away. As a working farm you may occasionally see us tending livestock, but we won't intrude on your stay.
Is Wilga Downs pet friendly?+
We love animals, but as a working farm we take livestock safety seriously. We don't allow herding or hunting breeds, or livestock other than horses. If you're thinking of travelling with a pet, have a chat with us first — well-trained, friendly dogs are generally very welcome.
